Frigoriferi Milanesi | The Unexpected Subject

April 2019, Milan

The exhibition was held at the Frigoriferi Milanesi, in collaboration with MART Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, Frittelli Arte Contemporanea and FLASH ART.
The exhibition has been realized thanks to the contribution of Dior.

In June 1978 at the Venice Biennale there was the women’s exhibition “Materializzazione del linguaggio”, curated by Mirella Bentivoglio; on the occasion of which about eighty artists – including Tomaso Binga, Lucia Marcucci, Irma Blank, Maria Lai, Giulia Niccolai, Mira Schendel, Anna Oberto, Patrizia Vicinelli, – made their entrance to the Biennale claiming loudly space and visibility in a place traditionally difficult for women to conquer. As part of the same edition of the Biennale, an anthological exhibition pays tribute to Ketty La Rocca, the protagonist of the Italian neo-avant-garde, who passed away in 1976 at the age of just thirty-eight and is now in the collections of MoMA and the Centre Pompidou. At the same time, at the Magazzini del Sale, the Biennale also gives space to the feminist group “Immagine” of Varese and to the group “Donne/Immagine/Creatività” of Naples.
